Family Support Programme

At Tabor Group, we understand that addiction doesn’t just affect the person alone, it impacts the entire family. Our Family Support Programme is designed to offer vital support to the concerned family members or loved ones of people with addiction. Over the years, we have seen firsthand the immense benefits that education, one-to-one counselling, and peer support can bring to families navigating the challenges of addiction.

In 2023, a total of 248 family members were supported through Tabor Group’s Family Support Programme. This gave them the opportunity to be directly involved in their loved one’s treatment while also receiving essential education and support for themselves. By learning about addiction and how it affects families, people gain a deeper understanding of how to respond more effectively to their loved one’s addiction and recovery journey.

We believe that just as we encourage people in treatment to make positive changes, family members can also be empowered to embrace positive changes for themselves and reach their own recovery.

How We Support Families

Our Family Support Programme provides a wide range of services to families, whether or not their loved one has chosen to engage in addiction treatment. We offer the following:
  • One-to-One Family Meetings: Confidential one-on-one sessions with our family services counsellor to talk through your personal experiences, and provide tailored guidance and emotional support. These one-hour sessions are available as often as needed, for a fee of €50.00 per session.
  • Four-Week Family Programme: An educational programme featuring themed talks, interactive workshops, and peer support groups.
  • Support Groups in Cork City: A 12-week, rolling, facilitated support group for families, offering education on how addiction affects families. The group provides time for open discussions and peer support, allowing participants to share their experiences and receive ongoing guidance.
  • Intervention Advice: Guidance on how to plan and execute a family meeting to encourage a loved one to seek help for their addiction. Our Family Services Officer can provide you with guidelines and support on planning the meeting, who should attend, and how to communicate in a way that fosters understanding and calm.
Each of these services aims to equip families with the tools they need to better understand addiction and cope with its impact.

Who Can Attend?

Our Family Support Programme is available to any family members or loved ones of people who are engaged in any of Tabor Group’s treatment programmes, following a referral from a Tabor Group counsellor and a meeting with the Family Support C-Ordinator.

Support is also available to families whose loved ones choose not to seek treatment, as we recognise the need for support in all circumstances of addiction.

Why Family Support Matters

Living with addiction can create a ripple effect, resulting in a wide range of emotional, psychological, and physical challenges for family members. You may feel trapped, constantly worried, or emotionally exhausted. You might notice signs like frequent arguments, walking on eggshells, or anxiety every time the phone rings. Our programme addresses these concerns, providing education on addiction, coping strategies, and support from peers who understand what you’re going through.

Living with addiction can have profound effects on your mental and physical health. You may notice symptoms such as:

  • Constant worry or stress
  • Feelings of anger, sadness, or hopelessness
  • Physical exhaustion or weight fluctuations
  • Sleep difficulties or high blood pressure
  • A sense of shame and stigma

Our Family Support Programme is here to help you regain control over your own life, while also equipping you with the knowledge and resources to support your loved one through their addiction and recovery journey.
