Tabor Group began its journey in 1989 as Tabor Lodge, established by the Sisters of Mercy to provide treatment for individuals struggling with alcohol addiction. The original structure, known as “Ballindeasig House,” dates back to 1790 and was formerly owned by the Hennessy family. The last resident, Miss Minnie Hennessy died in 1937 and left Ballindeasig House and its surrounding 50 acres of farmland to the Bishop of Cork & Ross, Daniel Coholan.
In 1938, the Bishop decided to convert the house into a holiday retreat for the Sisters of Mercy, naming it St. Mary’s Convent, Ballindeasig. The Sisters of Mercy occupied the property until 1989, when they transformed it into an Addiction Treatment Centre, renaming it ‘Tabor Lodge’ – the term ‘Tabor’ reflecting the transfiguration of Christ at Mount Tabor.
1993
In 1993, then Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Micheál Martin, turned the sod for a new extension to Tabor Lodge, increasing the bed capacity from 10 to 18. By 1995, a state-of-the-art extension was officially opened by the late Minister for Defence & Marine, Mr. Hugh Coveney, TD.
Recognising the profound impact of addiction on families, Tabor Group developed a Family Support Programme that offers counselling services and support groups for loved ones, whether or not the individual is receiving treatment at Tabor Group.
2002
In 2002, the Board of Directors established Tabor Fellowship, another addiction treatment centre located at Spur Hill, overlooking Cork City.
2010
In 2010, Tabor Lodge Addiction & Housing Services was incorporated as a Limited Company, unifying all treatment centres under one name. This year also marked the 21st anniversary of Tabor Lodge, celebrated with a special event featuring Micheál Martin TD as the guest speaker. Additionally, on October 30, 2010, Tabor Lodge welcomed the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, for a memorable visit.
